Galaxy S Wi-Fi 5.0
Otherwise known as the Galaxy Player 5, the Galaxy S Wi-Fi 5.0 is quite clearly aimed at the same patch of the market as the iPod Touch. It’s a little larger and heavier than its fruit-themed rival, but that’s because it has a rather more convincing 5″ display.
Features include two cameras (with a flash), wi-fi connectivity, gyroscope and accelerometer and a micro-USB port. Battery life is given as 60 hours of audio playback, and eight hours of video, and it does seems to perform at those levels. While you can’t get models with more than8GB of on-board memory, a micro-SD slot means you can add extra storage to your heart’s content, and its rated Android compatibility means you get access to the official Android Market and Google Maps.

Galaxy S Wi-Fi 5.0
There’s no question that this is trying to be Android’s answer to the iPod Touch, but sadly it’s not a very convincing play for the public’s interest. For a start, it’s still running the increasingly creaky Gingerbread, while the iPod Touch runs Apple’s most recent release of iOS. The chance of an upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich seems unlikely at this point, and that’s disappointing for anyone hoping to get access to the most modern features.
If you’re used to Samsung’s smartphones, the TouchWiz shell for Android will be familiar, and a few of Samsung’s pre-installed apps extend the functionality so that you’re able to do things like read and edit office documents. However, the single-core chip means it’s quite common for it to slow down and start to lag when running a lot of programs, so it’s tough to recommend it as a sort of super-portable tablet in the way you might recommend the iPod Touch as one.
So does it at least make a good media player? Well, maybe. It’s a fine music player, and the large screen means (in theory) that it’s good for watching video too.
Unfortunately, actually accessing content is a bit of a chore. You have to manually find and install Google Music to get at albums to buy, and TV shows are oddly absent from the Android Market – difficult to forgive. Still, if you want a capable media player but don’t want to buy into the Apple monoculture, this is your best choice. But that’s not really something Android can be proud of.
