Nexus 7 and the threat of the iPad mini
The seven-inch tablet wars are about to kick off big time. Google has made the first move with the Nexus 7, and Amazon is about to go worldwide with a new Android-powered Kindle Fire. But the elephant in the room is Apple. Despite Steve Jobs once ridiculing the idea of a seven-inch tablet, rumours are intensifying that an iPad mini is on the cards for this autumn.
[pullquote]That will help the Nexus 7: the people who would never buy Apple out of loyalty. If anything … the biggest loser will be a third platform rather than these two[/pullquote]
Such a third (or fourth) platform is arguably the Kindle Fire and any tablets that will be Windows-based. “The Nexus 7 is more in competition with the Kindle Fire and Google has clearly been looking to get a step ahead of the Kindle Fire before it launches in Europe,” says Oli Christie, Neon Play’s CEO.
The new competition could benefit everyone, however. “The competition that an iPad mini would provide would be great much more than the iPad or the iPhone,” adds Kassulke. “Both platforms are great.”
